4 Ways Oasis Improves the Environment (from Lawn Care to Business Operations)

But what about their decision to hire a lawn care company? Is lawn care bad for the environment?

The short answer is no—if you choose a company that is being environmentally conscious in the way that they perform their services. Even better, you might want to choose a company that even implements eco-friendly practices into their daily business operations.

In this article, we’re sharing ways in which Oasis Turf & Tree is improving the environment with not only lawn care practices, but also how we do business.

1. We’re Promoting Thick and Healthy Turf—Which is Good for the Environment

A lot of homeowners are surprised to learn that a thick and healthy turf can actually be really good for the environment. In this way, the lawn care environmental impact can be a positive (not a negative like people tend to assume).

When just the right amount of products are applied to the lawn, then those materials stay put and do the job of helping the lawn grow thick and healthy. When a qualified professional is handling your lawn care, then you can feel confident that they’re not over-applying. However, things can go awry when homeowners are taking a DIY approach to lawn care.

But when applied properly, and the grass grows thick and healthy, the benefits can abound. Here are just a few stats that the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) have shared.

  • Lawns create oxygen! One acre of grass produces more oxygen than one acre of rainforest.
  • On a hot summer day, lawns can be 30 degrees cooler than a blacktop driveway.
  • Lawns trap more than 12 million tons of dust and dirt annually.
  • Healthy turfgrass has many miles of fibrous roots that hold soil and filter rainwater, preventing erosion and runoff.

2. Utilizing Bionutrition is a Healthier Way of Performing Lawn Care

Of course, not all lawn care programs are created equally, particularly when it comes to environmental impact.

At Oasis Turf & Tree, we are focused on using bionutrition to promote soil health. Naturally healthy soil is full of beneficial microorganisms like fungi and bacteria, which help a plant to digest nutrients. This means that lawns that have healthy and biologically active soil are taking in way more of the lawn care products (and using them to their fullest extent) than lawns that do not.

Of course, not all bionutritional products are created equal. We wrote an article that goes into more depth explaining what is in our bionutrition and why it matters, if you’re looking for more specifics.

As more people begin to express interest in a healthy lawn (and in caring for the environment), words like “bionutrition” and “biostimulants” are getting thrown around more and more. It’s important that you be able to weed through marketing gimmicks and find a program that really works in order to get that true environmental impact.

3. We Do Not Over-Apply Products

We already mentioned that when homeowners take a DIY approach to lawn care, the lawn care environmental impact can be affected. They may over-apply or put products down at the wrong rate.

Unfortunately, even some lawn care companies do this. It’s quicker for them to just go through and spray everything.

But at Oasis Turf & Tree, we are spot spraying weeds, only applying product where it’s really needed. This targeted approach is better for the environment and not wasteful. We’re also always meticulously cleaning up using blowers and making sure the product ends up on the lawn where it can be absorbed (as opposed to left on hardscaping).

We also make cultural recommendations anywhere that homeowners can have an impact in their lawn’s health without products. For instance, properly mowing your lawn to the right cut height and providing the proper amount of water can make a huge difference in the overall health of your lawn. We love to provide cultural recommendations that help homeowners see the best results.

4. As a Company, We’re Reducing our Carbon Footprint

While the way we practice lawn care in the field is critical, we also know that improving our environmental impact is all about reducing our carbon footprint as a company. Oasis Turf & Tree has found several ways that we can do this through business operations.

One is through the use of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in our class. We recognized that if we could reduce the fuel we used while driving around to service our clients’ properties, it could make a big difference.

Along those same lines, we also pay close attention to creating the most efficient routes possible.

In terms of the products that we buy, homeowners often love to learn that we buy local. The products that we invest in are made here in Ohio so it’s not like we’re having all different products shipped in from all different parts of the country.

Another way that we’ve reduced our carbon footprint is by heating and cooling our facility with a geothermal HVAC system. We also have solar panels installed on our roof to power the building and we have implemented paperless billing. We recycle whenever possible and are constantly looking at additional ways that we can take our efforts even further.

There’s a Good Reason We’re Called the Green Industry

When people ask: “Is lawn care bad for the environment?” we know that they generally assume it’s not. The lawn care industry has gotten a bad rap over the years from companies who aren’t practicing environmentally friendly lawn care and who don’t seem to care about being good stewards of the environment.

But that’s not what this industry is all about. There are many companies, like Oasis Turf & Tree, who really do care about being “green.” We know that we’re making a difference by promoting thick and healthy turf which can help clean the air by removing carbon dioxide, filter dust, produce oxygen, and filter rainwater.

We can also make a difference by reducing our carbon footprint in the way that we practice business.

At Oasis Turf & Tree, you can count on us to continue to find ways that we can have a positive impact on the world around us. It’s a big part of the reason many of us got into the industry in the first place. We take a lot of pride in making our local community beautiful. At the same time, we know we’re doing good for the planet, too.
